Smacking Vs Time Out

Sometimes when you pick up your child you can feel the map of your own bones beneath your hands, or smell the scent of your skin in the nape of his neck. This is the most extraordinary thing about motherhood - finding a piece of yourself separate and apart that all the same you could not live without - Jodi Picoult

Parenting is fun!Wait,no...children are more fun thus making parenting journey one with the highs and the lows but awesome just to say the least. In parenting, don't miss a great season of your life wishing you had more, complaining what you can't do.The real joy in life is in the simple things.

On that note, should children be smacked after a mistake or should we direct them to the time out corner?

As kids grow up,they get smarter and manipulative. They also like testing boundaries by making mistakes to see the parents reactions. A child will repeat a mistake one two many times,to test your patience and smile back innocently.

See my smart kid here. (pause)  what would be your reaction to the smart kid?A smack or the time out?

Our growing up years were much harder and tougher.Even after a fist fight with the neighbor's kid we still got our share of the cane.Play was play, there was no two way to avoiding the corporal beating. The threats were well known. My mother would count to three or five threatening to beat some sense into me,if i was not done with a task on time.Harsh as it sounds it really worked.I grew up fearing the cane and the tone that the threats came with it.

Parents are slowly changing to the softer side of punishment by bringing in the time out.The time out as they say helps come down a child after they have been reprimanded.Time out,is a form of  punishment that involves temporarily separating a child from an environment where inappropriate behavior has occurred. It is intended to decrease positive reinforcement of the behavior.

In addition they say it helps the children realize their mistakes and revert to being sorry. The question that lingers is how long should a child be at the time out corner to realize his mistake and say they are sorry.Often a corner or a lone sit is recommended hence the word corner time or naughty corner. At the time out corner,a child needs to be talked through their misconduct by a parent or guardian.

In my opinion, time out does not work in children since they barely notice their mistake.Instead the child ends up feeling isolated and unwanted.Parents are gods and captains of their ships - children. They should take control by showing the children they have done a mistake even after the time out.May be best way is by grounding them and denying them their favourite toy or cartoon.

If you spank,do it with love to change a behaviour.Don't spank while angry because children tend to pick up what they see and feel around them.I support the smacking with a touch of love.Kindly let me hear your views,a smack with love or time out corner?

She's a kid. She is getting smarter. She is getting more manipulative, and she is getting really repetitive. She is testing boundaries. - See more at: http://www.askyourdadblog.com/2013/02/almost-spanking-duchess.html#sthash.WLaxZFjk.dpuf
